BACKGROUND

Basil (Ocimum spp) downy mildew (Peronospora belbahrii) was first identified in Uganda in 1932 [1;2]. Since 2001 it has appeared in Switzerland [3] and shortly afterwards in Italy (2003) and in the rest of the world with huge economic losses. The symptoms begin at the bottom of the leaf, which yellows, and evolve rapidly into necrosis of irregular shape at the centre of chlorotic lesions. The brown-greyish sporangia of the pathogen appears then on the lower surface of the leaves. P. belbahrii is an obligated pathogen that colonizes leaves, stems and seeds of basil [4;5]. It reproduces asexually, producing dark brown-violaceous zoosporangia that germinate 3-6 days after their formation [6;7;8;9]. Their germination requires at least 2 hours of exposure to water and temperatures of 15-20 C [10].

The protection of basil from downy mildew is primarily based on prevention. Adopting large rotations, destroying the residues of the sick crops, promoting the drainage of the soil, further distancing the plants, carefully aerating greenhouses and tunnels and employing tolerant varieties are the main agronomic interventions useful for preventing the disease (Disciplinary integrated production Emilia-Romagna Region). The use of healthy seed and the selection of less sensitive varieties are crucial. Irrigations that avoid the permanence of the water on the leaves must be preferred. The application of products with a fungicidal action remains, however, the primary management practice for basil downy mildew, even if not conclusive. According to the Integrated Production Specifications of the Emilia-Romagna Region, there are several chemicals allowed and only one biological active ingredient antiperonosporic, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. Resistance to Metalaxil-M is reported. Plant exposure to ozone (O3) has been proposed as a useful fungicidal, bactericidal and antiviral method. The efficacy of the administration of O3 at a concentration of 200 ppb was demonstrated for the powdery mildew of cucurbits [11; 12], but is considered useful in reducing all disease agents’ diffusion. The strategic importance of activated oxygen consists in the fact that the product do not leave residue in the environment nor on the treated vegetation. In greenhouse crops, exposure of infected plants to red light (λ 575 660 nm), inhibits spore production.
